Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to questions I'm frequently asked about my practice and approach.

About My Approach

How does my approach differ from other types of therapy?

My treatment approach is more structured and directive than many other forms of therapy. Rather than focusing primarily on past experiences, it concentrates on current problems and practical strategies for managing them. What makes my approach unique is how I blend this evidence-based structure with spiritual wisdom, offering both diagnostic feedback from the medical model and a broader conceptualization from a spiritual framework. Treatment typically involves homework assignments, skill-building exercises, and active collaboration between therapist and client to develop coping strategies.

How do you combine spiritual and scientific approaches?

I integrate evidence-based therapeutic techniques with spiritual wisdom to address both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of healing. This means we'll use proven therapeutic methods while also exploring how your spiritual beliefs, values, and practices can support your healing journey. The approach is personalized to honor your unique spiritual perspective.

What if I'm not religious or spiritual - can I still work with you?

Absolutely. While I offer spiritual integration for those who are interested, I never impose spiritual beliefs on clients. My primary training is in evidence-based therapeutic approaches, and I can work effectively with clients regardless of their spiritual or religious background. We'll focus on what feels authentic and helpful for you.

Will you try to change my spiritual beliefs?

Not at all. My role is to support and explore your existing spiritual framework, not to change it. I respect all spiritual traditions and work collaboratively with you to understand how your beliefs can support your healing process. If spiritual integration isn't relevant to your goals, we'll focus on other therapeutic approaches.

What ages do you work with?

I work with clients ages 6 and older, providing age-appropriate therapeutic approaches for children, adolescents, and adults.

Specialized Services

Do you provide psychedelic substances?

No, I do not provide or prescribe psychedelic substances. I am a therapist who specializes in integration work - helping people process and integrate insights from psychedelic experiences they've had elsewhere in supervised settings.

What does psychedelic integration involve?

Psychedelic integration therapy helps you process and apply insights from psychedelic experiences to your daily life. This involves exploring the meanings, emotions, and revelations that emerged during your experience, developing practical strategies to incorporate positive changes, and addressing any challenging aspects of the experience in a supportive therapeutic environment.

Do I need to have had a psychedelic experience to work with you?

No, psychedelic integration is just one of my specialties. I work with many clients who have never had psychedelic experiences and are seeking therapy for various mental health concerns using traditional therapeutic approaches.

Therapy Process

How long does treatment typically last?

My goal is to get you to "fire me" because I've taught you how to manage your concerns independent from my support. That said, the length of time that each client needs to reach that level of mastery is affected by several factors. The number of concerns and their complexity, the amount of home practice completed, and the willingness to tolerate discomfort can all influence the course of treatment. Some people also find that they need more time to develop safety in the therapeutic relationship. We'll regularly review your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

What should I expect in my first session?

Your first session will focus on getting to know you and understanding your concerns. We'll discuss your current symptoms, treatment goals, and relevant background information. You'll receive diagnostic feedback from the conceptualization of the medical model as well as a broader conceptualization from a spiritual framework.

How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?

You're likely a good fit for my practice if you're looking for a structured, goal-oriented approach that can integrate spiritual perspectives with evidence-based techniques. During our initial consultation, we'll discuss your goals and determine if my approach aligns with what you're seeking. I'm committed to helping you find the right therapeutic fit, even if that means referring you to another provider.

What if I don't feel comfortable with my therapist?

The therapeutic relationship is crucial for successful treatment. If you don't feel comfortable or connected with me, it's important to discuss this openly. Sometimes concerns can be addressed and resolved through conversation. If needed, I can help you find a referral to another therapist who might be a better fit.

Can family members or friends attend sessions with me?

While therapy is typically conducted individually, there may be times when including family members or friends could be beneficial to your treatment. This would be discussed and planned in advance, and you would have full control over who is invited and when.

Is everything I share in therapy confidential?

Yes, everything you share in therapy is confidential, with a few specific exceptions required by law: if there's immediate danger to yourself or others, suspected child or elder abuse, or if records are subpoenaed by a court. I'll always discuss these limitations with you and, whenever possible, involve you in decisions about sharing information.

Practical Information

Do you accept insurance?

I am not empaneled with any insurance companies. Out-of-network treatment offers several important benefits: greater control over your treatment decisions without insurance company restrictions, access to specialized treatments and innovative therapies, faster access to care, and a stronger therapeutic relationship. While you'll pay more out-of-pocket initially, many clients find this investment leads to better outcomes and more personalized attention.

Do you offer online/telehealth sessions?

Yes, I offer secure video therapy sessions for clients. In-person sessions are not available at this time. Telehealth sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant platform and can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many people. I can serve clients in all states that are currently participating in PSYPACT. Click here to see participating states.

What makes your telehealth sessions effective?

I use a HIPAA-compliant platform that ensures privacy and security. The structured, goal-oriented nature of my approach translates well to online sessions, and many clients find the convenience of accessing therapy from home actually enhances their engagement with the process.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?

I require 24-hour notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be subject to a cancellation fee. I understand that emergencies happen, and we can discuss these situations on a case-by-case basis.

Can I contact you between sessions?

For brief questions or scheduling issues, you can email or call me. For more complex concerns, it's usually best to discuss them in our next session. I typically respond to non-urgent messages within 24-48 hours during business days.

What happens if I experience a crisis between sessions?

If you're experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room. For urgent but non-crisis situations, you can leave a message on my confidential voicemail, and I'll return your call as soon as possible, typically within 24 hours.
